Watpac builds Gold Coast’s largest corporate 'Tower of Power'

In 1990, Watpac started construction on the Gold Coast's 'Tower of Power, 50 Cavill Avenue', Surfers Paradise - a defining project for the company. It won the 1992 Queensland Master Builders Association 'Building Project of the Year'. This kickstarted our reputation for innovation which helped secure the next project, Terrica Place as well as achieving approved contractor status with the Queensland Government.

#Following on from 50 Cavill Avenue, Watpac achieved third-party certification for its Quality Assurance system through NATA, becoming only the second major construction company to be certified to Quality Assurance standard AS3902.

The deep diaphragm construction of 50 Cavill Avenue allowed for multi-level basement construction in a high-water table area and fast-tracked the construction timetable. General Manager at the time, Garry Rossow, said the project “was constructed from the middle and then up and down simultaneously, enabling the building’s five basements to be completed in the same time as it would have taken to complete two basements."

Watpac also became an approved contractor for the Queensland Government in August 1992, a status BESIX Watpac has proudly maintained to this day.

#Terrica Place was another defining project for early innovation formalising the “Partnering Principle” approach. Watpac pioneered the “superhoist” and value engineering design to find efficiencies in construction and costs.

On the back of Cavill Avenue's success, Watpac was awarded the Terrica Place office tower located on the corner of Adelaide and Creek Streets – developed by Australian Estate Management (AEM) on behalf of the Commonwealth of Australia.

The Partnering Principle lives on today in BESIX Watpac projects and is the genesis of our company values for “co-creation” and “unity”. Through this same win, win approach, BESIX Watpac constructed the globally recognised Wurun Senior Campus and the complex and challenging Australian Catholic University St Teresa of Kolkata in Melbourne as well as Brisbane's Jubilee Place.
