BESIX and Watpac join forces

2018 was a momentous year that started Watpac on its new course. On 3 December 2018, BESIX Group announced its intention to acquire all remaining Watpac shares after successfully completing a transaction to buy a controlling interest in the company. Watpac de-listed from the Australian Securities Exchange in the final week of December 2018.

During the financial year, Watpac secured $1.4 billion in new building work, including the second stage of the Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Hospital redevelopment, the Deakin Law School building in Melbourne and the multi-site Department of Defence Explosive Ordinance Logistics Reform Program in New South Wales and Victoria. In South Australia, the company won a contract to build EI8HT South Esplanade and its second major project for Adelaide Airport.

During 2017 and 2018, the business also saw a number of changes at the Board level including the retirement of the chair and long-standing non-executive director Dick McGruther and the appointment of Rik Vandenberghe from BESIX. The Civil and Mining business reported a challenging year and the company moved to consolidate its operations.

Key projects delivered in 2018 included Mary Lane, Newstead Series and Riverlight - Hamilton Reach in Brisbane, Summer Hill and York & George in Sydney and Casey Hospital Expansion and Union Tower in Melbourne.

Four stadiums and sporting venues built by BESIX Watpac provided the backdrop for many of the sporting events as well as the opening and closing ceremonies for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games. These four award-winning and state-of-the-art facilities included Anna Meares Velodrome, Carrara Stadium, Robina Stadium and the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre.
