Enduring Partnerships

Business is flying in South Australia

Our 30th year of business, 2012 marked challenging conditions for the property and construction markets. Watpac wrote down its property book and created separate business units for Civil and Mining. Chris Freeman took over as Chairman of the Board from Kevin Seymour, and National General Manager for Construction Martin Monro stepped into the CEO role.

Despite the difficult conditions, the business consolidated its expanded presence in South Australia by winning a second project in that state – the redevelopment of Adelaide’s historic Colonial Mutual Life (CML) building into the new $35 million boutique Mayfair Hotel. We've gone from strength to strength in this state and have built a solid workbook of projects that are transforming Adelaide.

Business is flying in South Australia

#Watpac entered the South Australian market in 2011, creating a partnership with Adelaide Airport that continues to this day.

Our first project at Adelaide Airport involved the construction of a five-level car park with direct access to Terminal 1 via a new pedestrian plaza space. Today, we’re still working at the Airport and have completed more than $200 million in works including a major terminal redevelopment and the new exhibition space for the historic Vickers Vimy Aircraft.

In 2012, Watpac completed stage two of the $134 million Queensland Institute of Medical Research building in Brisbane and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney.

“Although Watpac Construction has experienced a slight downturn this year as a result of weakened market conditions, we have worked hard to successfully win new work and expand geographically,”
